More than 2500 spectators are tipped to put their best fashion foot forward and head for The Spit today for the annual McLaren Gold Coast Polo by the Sea — one of the biggest social and sporting events on the calendar. Urban Polo founder Janek Gazecki and ambassador Natalie Decorte, with polo pony Jesus, are ready for a big day.

THOUSANDS of people will be dressed to impress and heading to Doug Jennings Park on The Spit today for one of the biggest combined social, fashion and sporting events of the year.

The McLaren Gold Coast Polo by the Sea is back for its sixth year, with 2500 spectators expected to flock to the field to watch the ponies tear up the turf.

Local VIPs watching the action will include Mayor Tom Tate and wife Ruth, Surfers Paradise MP John Paul Langbroek and wife Stacey, newly elected Member for Moncrieff Angie Bell and partner Roslyn Franklin, leading business and Titans identities Rebecca and Brett Frizelle, and former Broncos captain and Queensland and Australian rugby league representative Corey Parker and his radio star wife Margaux.

For those wondering about fashion etiquette, Urban Polo ambassador Natalie Decorte said wearing a fascinator to the event would be a big no-no as polo fashion is “completely different”.

“The biggest difference between the races and the polo is that it’s not as structured and as formal. Comfortable clothing is a must,” she said. “Definitely no fascinators. I think linen is always perfect for the polo.”

Mrs Decorte will be wearing a linen piece by Sydney designer Marlo by Marlo, supporting sustainability in the fashion industry where orders are personalised, leaving little wastage.

Polo by the Sea is one of 10 Urban Polo events held across Australia annually.

But the fashion and professional ponies won’t be the only thing that will be grabbing spectators’ attention – with Queensland’s only McLaren Senna, coloured in a bright metallic orange called papaya spark and valued at $2 million, will be on display.

McLaren Gold Coast Polo by the Sea starts at 11.30am today at Doug Jennings Park. General admission tickets are $85.
