Revitalised Dogs ready for tests

-

A REBORN Burleigh Heads are blocking out the noise surrounding last month’s mini form slump as they fight to stay in control of the Gold Coast Premier League title race.

After opening the season with eight straight wins, the Bulldogs stalled on May 18 as Surfers Paradise signalled their aspirations with a 3-0 triumph.

Three days later, Palm Beach inflicted a second loss with a 4-3 victory, allowing second-placed Surfers to close the gap on Burleigh to two.

However, Colin Phelan’s troops have regrouped over the past two weeks, doing just enough to account for Tweed United 2-0 before showing their class in a 3-1 defeat of Nerang last weekend.

The Bulldogs were in a similar position last season, winning their first seven games before stumbling late.

Despite another stern test looming at home to fifthplaced Coomera at 5.30pm today, Phelan said: “We’re top of the league. We just go and win our next game and don’t worry about anyone else.

“We know it’s going to be difficult (to win the league) but it’s in our hands. We’re where everyone wants to be.”

Coming off the jubilation of their FFA Cup Round 7 win over Logan Lightning, Coomera missed a golden chance to climb into the top four with a 2-0 loss away to Broadbeach United on Tuesday night.

Today at 3pm Broadbeach chase a third straight win when they make a trip to Surfers and lowly Mudgeeraba host Tweed United.

In tomorrow’s game, Nerang travel to Palm Beach (4pm).
