Dan chases a special title

KING of the Coast Dan Griffin says a potential ninth jockeys premiership would be the most significant of his career.

Griffin is in the box seat to take out the 2018-19 Gold Coast jockeys premiership with the respected hoop holding a five-win lead over closest rival Luke Dittman with three meetings left.

It would be an incredible feat given Griffin started riding three months after his rivals in the current season due to the horrific broken neck he suffered four months earlier at the Gold Coast track.

“It would be special to win another one,” Griffin said.

“Last year I had all that terrible stuff happen and I came back three months later than the others. I gave them a good headstart.

“I set a goal that I wanted to win this one and it would mean more to me personally to win this one than any before. To be so far down and bounce back would be special.”

But Griffin said he would put the thought of winning out of his mind until after the final meeting of the season on July 20.

“Anything could happen. It’s not over until it’s over so I’ll keep fighting,” Griffin said. “I’ll just try to not think about it too much and go out and do my best.

“If you let it play on your mind you will make a poor decision on the track.”

Griffin is booked to ride seven horses today at Aquis Park, which was rated a Soft 7 yesterday.

He rates Les Kelly trained trio Exploration ($7), Hacksaw Ridge ($5) and Jackpot Jay ($6.50) as his best chances.
