Wright urged to find answer

PETER Wright has been challenged by Suns coach Stuart Dew to have a greater impact in the contest and start sticking his marks after being overlooked for senior selection.

Wright was a late “out” for Gold Coast’s 92-point loss to Richmond last weekend and the tall forward, who recently inked a contract extension with the club, won’t be playing when they take on Adelaide tonight.

Dew said the heavy rain in the lead up to last week’s game played a role in their decision to axe the 22-yearold in favour of midfielder Will Brodie, with the club opting to keep fellow talls Sam Day and Ben King in the side instead.

Dew said Wright, who has kicked 17 goals this season, needed to find form in the NEAFL.

“We have been talking to Pete about what his best looks like and he will be the first to admit he has been a bit down on that in terms of influencing the game,” Dew said.

“The weather probably dictated last week and then we thought Sam, with limited looks last week, had a real presence.

“Kingy is tracking OK and certainly trained really well again last night so we are looking forward seeing what he can do.

“It’s a week-to-week thing like we said to Sam earlier in the year we are not set on one formation.

“For this week we want Pete to go back and dominate like Josh Corbett did a couple of weeks ago and bounce back in because at his best he is in our best 22.

“(He needs to work on) his impact in the contest, taking his marks.

“Predominantly play as a forward, a few looks on the ball as a ruckman but taking his marks and hitting the scoreboard.”

Dew said he chose to keep the faith in the group instead of axing many after last week’s performance, hoping it was a one-off.

“Given we don’t think it’s been a habit to be as poor as we were in the first half, so we wanted to show some faith and back the guys in for this week,” Dew said.

“If it was a repeat behaviour we can do that but also we do need guys banging the door down from NEAFL level.

“Certainly Rish (Michael Rischitelli) has been solid all year and Sean (Lemmens) has come back in (from injury). They came in via injury but really they would have come in on their own merits anyway.”
