THOUSANDS of people have flocked to Byron Parklands for the first day of Splendour in the Grass 2019.

The three-day Byron Bay music festival is in full swing for the weekend ahead with US rappers Donald Glover, known as Childish Gambino, performing tonight and Chance The Rapper closing tomorrow.

Many noted online the police presence and sniffer dogs on the field, stopping festival goers trying to smuggle in alcohol and drugs.

One person took to Twitter describing police at one of the campsites.

“I’ve been to nine Splendours and this is the first one that has felt more like a prison than a festival thanks to Gladys Berejiklian (and) NSW police (sic),” she wrote.

For those who are attempting jumping the fence this weekend, SITG festival organisers have warned they can cop a $350 fine for trespassing and will be evicted from the North Byron Parklands site.

The celebrations started on Thursday night with Red Bull’s A Night With Splendour in the Grass.

Yesterday the first day of Splendour began with Gold Coast fashion label Princess Polly teaming up with Afterpay to host a pre-Splendour party where more than 150 people turned up for the early afternoon event.

Australian psychedelic band Tame Impala finished the day one celebrations.

The temperature barely reached 19 degrees yesterday but it didn’t stop hundreds from wearing bare-all to the event.

Hundreds of people have posted on Instagram, sharing their loud, completely seethrough and glittery outfits.

Flared pants with bralettes were worn by many, with dozens of men spotted wearing denim overalls.

The entertainment kicks off again today and tomorrow at 11am – wrapping up tomorrow night at 2am.
