Scott’s left behind at Open

Heat on for finals places

-

ADAM Scott left himself with a desperate fight to avoid his first British Open cut in a decade after making a disastrous start at Royal Portrush.

Scott racked up two double bogeys and four bogeys in a demoralising seven-over-par 78, his worst opening to the championship since a forgettable 82 at Royal St George’s in 2003.

Hoping to make another run for the Claret Jug in his 20th consecutive Open tilt, Scott floundered in Portrush’s fairway pots and again battled a recalcitrant putter.

“I didn’t really have anything going my way and got myself into some trouble I couldn’t get out of. It’s just disappointing,” Scott said.

“It’s classic links golf; you’ve got to stay out (of trouble) and when you’re in them, you’ve got to get out and twice today I left it in a bunker.

“It’s always easier said than done, but it was one of those days – every bunker I was in, I was on the back side of a bunker and it wasn’t just as simple as getting it out.” JACK McCarthy has stormed into today’s semi-finals of the MAPEI Gold Coast Junior Tennis International.

The third day of the under-16 tournament at Burleigh Waters saw 566thranked McCarthy defeat Zac Larke 6-3 3-6 6-2 in their quarter-final clash.

The 410th-ranked Alex Bulte defeated 218th-ranked Cooper White 7-5 3-6 7-6(3).

The No.1 seed for the girls, Anastasia Berezov (ranked 140th) narrowly beat Mia Repac 6-4 1-6 6-3.

Meanwhile 376th-ranked Sara Nayar went the distance against 416th-ranked Lara Walker, prevailing 4-6 6-2 7-5.

Singles and doubles action resumes today with the semifinals starting at 10am.
