Happy days at United

Revitalised women’s side creating an impression

THE Gold Coast United NPL women’s team may just be the most in-form football side on the Coast.

After former coach Michael Cook relinquished his role in May this year, interim coaches Craig Midgely and Alex Bundalo have taken the Surfsiders to seven straight wins.

United are undefeated since May 4 and have recorded seven wins, two draws and scored 36 goals while only conceding five in their past nine games.

Midgely, who serves as the club’s technical director, said he was impressed by the team’s remarkable consistency after deciding to place a large emphasis on team morale when he took up the role earlier this season.

“I thought I could come into the coaching set-up and bring something they needed,” Midgely said.

“It hasn’t been any magical coaching but I guess more improving the atmosphere and mindset of the girls.

“We’ve got our consistency going and we have a very settled side which helps us with the shape of the team and everyone knowing their roles.

“It’s a very happy environment.”

On top of United’s on field success, the club have also managed to give fans an insight into the future.

They blooded Claudia Danckert, 15, last weekend and she became the youngest player to represent United.

“We want to give players an opportunity if they’re good enough,” Midgely said.

“We had Annabelle Gibson come into the side seven weeks ago and we’ve won seven on the trot since then with her down back and she’s only just turned 16.”

Despite United producing their stellar run against lowerranked opponents, Midgely was confident his side could produce their best form against the top sides.

“(Lions) are the best side in the competition and Moreton Bay are also very strong so we have to be at our best to get the results,” Midgely said. “Any team is beatable.” United, who are fourth on the ladder, play the fifthplaced The Gap tonight at Walton Bridge Reserve at 7pm.
