FROM SHIELD EXCITEMENT TO CRUTCHES IN JUST 48 HOURS

-

Q You represented Australia at under-19 level and along came your Sheffield Shield debut for Queensland in late 2013. It didn’t quite go to plan though, did it?

A

Yeah, it was a pretty unique debut, to be fair, to damage my knee like I did and then miss the next three or four months of cricket.

You think about how many times you land on your knee and it just so happened to be on debut. It was just one of those things where you go, I wonder what would have happened if it didn’t happen.

But you never know, that’s the thing. It was at AB (Allan Border Field) too so it’s usually a pretty good wicket to bat on but I didn’t get that opportunity unfortunately.

Q

Further to that, how exactly did that debut injury happen when you were in the field?

A

This is thing, I’m not really too sure when I did it because my knee blew up a couple of hours after the game (on day one) at about eight o’clock that night when I was in the hotel. So I’m not too sure when I actually specifically did it. No one could really pinpoint it to be honest but I burst the bursa sac around my knee so it was something completely strange.

Q

That must have been a pretty crushing low after the extreme high of earning your debut?

A

The thing was, I actually found out the day before the game that I was making my debut because Greg Moller didn’t pass a fitness for his knee injury. So I actually found out the day before my debut and then I obviously did the injury on the first day and then I was on crutches the next day. So within the space of 48 hours I had gone from finding out that I was debuting to being on crutches and missing out on three months of cricket.
