Thynne is the glory ... why coaches tip Tom for trophy

-

THERE is just one man Gold Coast QAFL coaches believe can win this year’s Syd Guildford Trophy – Palm Beach Currumbin’s Thomas Thynne.

The midfielder held a 12-point lead when voting went into secrecy after Round 13. The winner will be announced the Grogan Medal dinner in September.

The Syd Guildford Trophy is awarded to the player judged to be the best in the competition by the QAFL’s nine coaches. They award votes on a 1-to-5 basis after each game.

The Gold Coast coaches believe the award is Thynne’s to lose. Today we publish their predictions for their top three at season’s end.

JESS SINCLAIR Palm Beach Currumbin

1. Thomas Thynne (Palm Beach Currumbin):

He was best on ground again for us last weekend so I dare say he will poll more votes. He is extraordinary and an elite player. He got tagged again last weekend but he turned it on. He is so quick and evasive. He doesn’t get caught and steps through the traffic. He is good on the inside and outside, breaks lines and drives the ball forward for us.

2. Andrew Smith (Mt Gravatt)

3. Jackson Fisher (Broadbeach)

LIAM BURKE Labrador

1. Thomas Thynne (Palm Beach Currumbin):

Tom is a gun. We didn’t tag him early last week and he wasn’t impacting too much but he started influencing in the second term and we sent someone to him. Palmy did well to protect him and he broke a tag so we had to send someone else to him. He is an elite runner and has good skills. His work rate is phenomenal. He can win the ball on the inside and be damaging on the outside. He is the complete player.

2. Henry Joyce (Morningside)

3. Jackson Fisher (Broadbeach)

BRAD MOORE Surfers Paradise

1. Thomas Thynne (Palm Beach Currumbin):

It will be hard for anyone to beat Tommy. He is in great form this year. He is a guy who can play on the inside and outside of the midfield. He does both really well. He can win the ball and use the ball so well. He is nearly your all-round footballer. He is in really good form too. He has some really good players around him and that helps but he can do it all.

2. Henry Joyce (Morningside)

3. Andrew Smith (Mt Gravatt)

BEAU ZORKO Broadbeach

1. Thomas Thynne (Palm Beach Currumbin):

Tommy will be hard to run down but I think Jackson Fisher will make it close. Tom provides a lot of grunt to Palmy’s midfield. We all know that engine room is a critical part of the game. It’s repeat stoppages and when you have players in there who can roll their sleeves up and go to work and win their own ball they are very valuable. He is one who does that for them. He seems to be accumulating the ball a lot more.
