Day made as Suns lock in forward again

-

INAUGURAL Sun Sam Day has extended his contract with the club, committing through to the end of the 2021 season.

The 26-year-old, who joined the Suns with the third pick in the 2010 AFL draft, has played 115 games throughout his nine years with the club, after debuting in Round 7 of the 2011 season.

Day who will line up for his sixth game of the season against the Bombers tomorrow after returning from shoulder surgery, was excited about the opportunity that lay ahead with the playing group the club now had.

“As one of the original Suns I’m really excited to extend my contract with the club,” Day said.

“We’ve got a great family here on the Coast and there’s a lot of hard work ahead of us but we’re up for the challenge.

“I can’t wait to keep going forward with this group, there is exciting things to come.”

General manager football operations Jon Haines was pleased that Day could see the future direction of the football club. “It’s great to have a player of Sam’s ability and character commit to the club,” Haines said.

“He’s been an integral member of the team since our inaugural season and will continue to form an important part of the future of our football club.”

Day joins a raft of core players to re-sign with the club already this season including leadership group members, David Swallow, Jarrod Witts, Touk Miller and Alex Sexton as well as Rory Thompson, Peter Wright, Ben Ainsworth, Jack Bowes and Izak Rankine.

HEADING into the closing weeks of an AFL season with everything to play for is a new sensation for Brisbane’s Daniel McStay.

The 24-year-old hasn’t experienced much joy in his previous five seasons at the Gabba, winning just 18 of 79 matches following his 2014 debut.

In those seasons the Lions finished 15th, 17th, 17th, 18th and 15th.

Already in 2019 McStay has played in 12 wins for the Lions as they’ve rocketed to second on the ladder with just five matches to go in the regular season.

“It means a lot to us absolutely and we’re hungrier than ever,” McStay said. “When you’ve been down for so long – the likes of Richy (Daniel Rich) and Zorks (Dayne Zorko), you know Rich hasn’t played in a final for 10 years – we’re hungry for more success. “That’s what we’re aiming at.” Ahead of today’s trip to Hawthorn, McStay signed a three-year contract extension earlier in the week to stay put until 2022.
