Weiss works his way back for Tigerstix action

- ELIZA REILLY

LABRADOR’S chances of securing a maiden Brisbane Hockey League title look set to be bolstered by the return of goalkeeper Aaron Weiss who is tracking well after a broken wrist required surgery.

It was initially feared Weiss would miss the rest of the season after suffering the injury in late June playing for Burleigh in the Gold Coast league but he could now return when Labrador need him most.

“I’m now hoping to be back mid-finals (early September),” Weiss said. “A player ran into me after I made a save with my arm outstretched so it twisted the wrong way. I’ve done my hamstring a few times but this is my first broken bone.”

After suffering soft-tissue injuries in the past, the 23year-old doesn’t expect to face the same challenges though he will play with a brace at first.

“That (hamstring) was more mental but with this injury I’ve been down at training with the ball machine practising with my feet so I won’t be coming straight back into it,” he said.

Though Weiss admitted it was difficult watching on, the 2018 Queensland Blades member said he’d been impressed by the development of rookie goalkeeper Nick Shawyer.

After failing to take early chances against Easts last week, Weiss expects the Tigerstix to not afford Commercial the same luxury when the sides meet at 4pm today at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre.

In Gold Coast Division 1 fixtures, Casuarina play Labrador, Mudgeeraba take on Capri and the Roosters line up against Burleigh. Labrador face Mudgeeraba and Burleigh tackle Capri in the women.
