THERE’S A WAR ON AGRICULTURE, WE NEED TO FIGHT BACK

- Watch Paul Murray LIVE Sunday - Thursday at 9pm PAUL MURRAY

WE all know agriculture is worth billions to the nation, and is the life blood of so many regional economies. But what you also need to know is there is an army of activists whose dream is to shut it down.

Just this week the UN’s climate change body said everyone in the world should eat less meat, while the same climate change obsessives say we should tax meat like cigarettes. A ridiculous MP in Victoria even compared processed meat to asbestos.

Make no mistake, there is a virtual industry of people who want to kill one of Australia’s biggest exports. If we don’t call them out now, they will follow the march of the left on so many issues and take root, making it virtually impossible for common sense to prevail.

Climate change has empowered these forces to push for the meat-free future they dreamt of long before “global warming” was an issue.

One of the main ways they discredit agriculture is by suggesting that the more meat we need the heavier the cost to the environment. Ironically, much of the lobby that is trying to kill off agriculture are also the ones who push for endless population growth for Australia and will call you racist if you try to offer any resistance. More people, not more cows, are the bigger stress to the planet.

But this doesn’t matter to the zealots who are hunting our rural sector. They see their cause as a holy one. The see every little battle as the way of winning a war on meat.

Take the newly elected member of the upper house in Victoria, Andy Meddick. As a member of the Animal Justice Party he wants everyone in the parliament to ditch meat on Mondays, despite the fact he is the only known vegan MP in the entire place. He said it is “a common-sense and reasonable measure”. Yeah, forget the fact the parliament is meant to represent all Victorians, including the thousands of meat producers who provide the state with millions in taxes.

He doesn’t stop there. This same bloke has been appointed to Victoria’s peak health body, VicHealth, and says processed meat is in the same harmful category as cigarettes and asbestos.

What a ridiculous suggestion. Exposure to a single fibre of asbestos can lead to fatal Mesothelioma. That hardly happens when you eat a burger or have some Cabanossi with Jatz.

These people say we must do everything they want to battle climate change because the science is in. Yet they ignore science to make ever more outrageous claims to kill agriculture.

They don’t care about the effect on the planet, they just hate eating meat and the industries which produce it.

But we can’t just laugh. We need to push back. We need our elected leaders, all of them, to publicly reject these people and come down hard on the side of common sense.

So, do your bit to annoy a lefty this weekend, throw anything on the barbie. Just not tofu.
