Marlene Curry has used a run to a global beauty pageant top 10 to revive pageant pleas of yesteryear for ends to war and violence.

The typical catchcry of Miss World contestants in the 1980s was to call for world peace, saving whales and feeding Africa.

The 24-year-old Curry who only started entering pageants when discovered in

Beer Garden cheering a

mate in Miss Supercars was Australia’s representative at Miss Grand International

last month.

In her run to the top

10 out of 86 entries, she made an emotional speech to the crowd at the glitzy event in Venezuela, asking them to close their eyes and imagine a happy place, in a field of flowers with kids laughing and family.

“Now I want you to imagine that world blown apart – imagine a world where bombs fall, families are torn, a

world without a home, a world without peace. A world with no peace is a world with no future.”

Curry, home this week, tells ATG she had a huge audience for her message: “(The competition) was really good, competitive. I had an audience of 20,000 and global reach on social media to a couple of million.”

Curry has spent five years as a disability support worker: “But I love travelling. It goes hand in hand with beauty competition. I’ve had comps in South Africa, China. I get to travel every year now with a few pageants.”

Curry’s next venture is to continue working while studying for a degree in nursing at QUT University.
