Blood on man: cops

Bail application delayed

- LEA EMERY

A GOLD Coast man accused of a violent bashing in a Surfers Paradise public toilet yesterday morning was found by police in a nightclub with blood on his ankle, a court was told.

Kyle Young, 26, wiped his eyes repeatedly when he appeared in Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to face one count of grievous bodily harm. His alleged victim, a 33year-old man, is in an induced coma in the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Police prosecutor Joel Sleep told the court the man had a broken bone in his neck, fractures to the skull and bleeding on the brain. It is alleged Young kicked and punched the man to the ground in a toilet block in a Ferny Ave park about 1.30am.

A 19-year-old and 21-yearold were allegedly with Young, but have not been charged.

“Young was interviewed by police and stated he had 12 double-shot alcohol drinks and as a result was unable to remember anything,” Mr Sleep said.

He said police connected Young to the alleged bashing through CCTV footage.

The court was told cameras were used to track Young to a licensed premises in Surfers Paradise and police found “brown-red liquid drops” on Young’s pants and a “dried red substance” on his ankle.

Duty lawyer Bill Siganto, of Legal Aid Queensland, said questions needed to be asked. He said there was an allegation the victim had followed another man in the group.

Magistrate Mark Howden said more information was needed.

“I don’t think a page and a half in a bail affidavit with very serious allegations is enough for me to decide this bail application,” he said.

Magistrate Howden said he would like to see the CCTV footage and get more information about the medical condition of the man in the coma.

The bail application was dismissed, to be reheard on Monday.
