Brothers chasing glory

Blaze pair confident they can turn table on Pride

- ELIZA REILLY @Eliza_Reilly2

THEY missed out on the shot to play together in Labrador’s drought-breaking Brisbane Hockey League premiership earlier this year but now brothers Dylan and Blake Wotherspoon will get the chance to chase glory on the national stage.

Dylan was part of Labrador’s first BHL premiership in September but was denied the chance to share the success with his sibling who was in competing in Holland.

This afternoon in Melbourne, the two will get the chance to achieve a special feat when they line up alongside each other for the Brisbane Blaze in the inaugural Hockey One grand final against the NSW Pride.

“We have a pretty good connection, him playing striker and me playing in defence,” Blake said. “It would be a great feeling to get it done especially after missing the BHL grand final.”

Dylan said: “We played together in the Australian hockey league grand final on the Gold Coast but it’s good to have him back after gaining lots of experience overseas.”

Standing in the way of the quest for premiership glory are the NSW Pride and their coach Brent Livermore, who was also part of Labrador’s premiership side this year. “There’s always a bit of banter and a few messages flying back and forth,” Blake said.

The Blaze fell 5-0 to the Pride last time the teams met but the brothers believe their side has done enough to reverse their fortunes.

“It’s a final so anything can happen,” Dylan said. “We

were pretty embarrassed with how we played so we can only get better.”

Blake said: “We’ve fixed up a few things so I think it will be a different game.”

The Blaze men play at 1pm (Qld time) followed by the Blaze women, featuring a stack of Gold Coast talent, who play Melbourne at 3pm.
