Groms eye chance to become the next Parko

-

GROMMETS of Queensland are making final preparations for the Parko’s Grom Stomp, which is set to kick off on the Sunshine Coast today and run over two days.

The prestigious event, now in its 12th year, will attract more than 100 of the best grommets from several countries to the region, competing in divisions ranging from the 12 and unders through to the blue ribbon 16 and unders.

The surf forecast shows a two-foot mid-period northeast swell approaching the Sunshine Coast in time, along with north-westerly winds.

WSL world champion Joel Parkinson (Tweed Heads) is excited to be bringing the event back to his former home town of the Sunshine Coast.

“I can’t wait to get back up to where it all started for me and watch the next generation rip it up,” Parkinson said.

Zeb Stokes (Buddina) has just returned to Australia after representing his country at the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships

in Huntington Beach, California, and is looking forward to competing in the 16 and under boys division.

“I’m excited for the Parko event,” Stokes said.

“I’m stoked to wear the contest rashie again this weekend. That (ISA) event was definitely an experience in terms of meeting new people and learning – I’ll definitely be taking everything I’ve learned in the USA and putting it toward this event.”

Stokes’ younger sister Jahly (Buddina), who won the 12 and under girls division last year, is looking forward to stepping up to the 14 and under girls.

“I’m feeling good heading into the event,” Jahly said.
