Funny bid to offload joke

Wag goes online to flog the M1 lights

- KIRSTIN PAYNE

LIKE anyone looking to purge themselves of an unwanted Christmas gift, a disgruntled resident has turned to Gumtree to rid the Gold Coast of its biggest white elephant.

In a hilarious post on the advertising website, an anonymous resident listed the Gold Coast’s controversial Yatala M1 lights for sale.

The listing, showing a photo of the M1 installation, was titled “unwanted gift – roadside light pole”.

The 11m-high installation cost $2.1 million as part of a “welcome” entry to the city ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“Was given this weird gift for an event but wasn’t to my taste, I believe they cost around 2 million dollars for the lot,” the advertisement read.

“Would swap for something tangible like a motorbike or a function public health system.

“The neighbours don’t really have a lot of use for them, so they've gotta go. “My loss your gain. “Great for the patio, a crafts project or a makeshift Christmas tree. If nobody collects them, I’ll take them to vinnies ...

“Located on the M1 motorway, watch the cars though, it’s a bit sketchy during peak hour, lol.”

The contact number listed was for the Gold Coast City Council.

The free listing has since been marked as sold.

The lights installation has long been a subject of annoyance for some and a joke for others on the Gold Coast as they cannot be seen correctly from the road.

In January the Gold Coast City Council voted to keep the lights instead of spending another $255,000 to put them in temporary storage.
