Court sequel to attack Two row over cash

- LEA EMERY

A GOLD Coast social worker and volunteer tried to break into a mate’s home after an argument over about $400.

Gregg Scot Weber threatened his friend and repeatedly kicked the door of his Currumbin Waters home – all because the man had asked for his money back.

During the attack in the early hours of July 17 last year, Weber yelled: “Come down, get your money and take your hiding like a man.”

Weber had hours earlier sent the man a text message, that read: “I will see you after 6pm with your extortion money, b **** .”

The 45-year-old called his friend the next day and said “I am coming again tonight” before hanging up.

Weber pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court yesterday to attempted burglary while in company and with violence.

The surfboard maker has made a name for himself in the southern Gold Coast area while working with Arcadia

College and volunteering with the Palm Beach Currumbin Lions and helping set up an after-dark program with the Elanora Police Beat.

Prosecutor Rana Aldas said the dispute started after Weber and the victim got into an argument about money owed for work completed laminating surfboards.

The man was demanding the money Weber owed him, the court heard.

Weber turned up at the man’s Currumbin Waters home with another man and began making threats.

Defence barrister Nick McGhee, instructed by Brooke Winter Solicitors, said Weber moved to Australia from the United States in 2005 as part of his surfboard-shaping business.

Mr McGhee said while in Australia Weber had studied community services and begun a career in social work.

Judge Jennifer Rosengren sentenced Weber to 12 months in prison, to be wholly suspended for two years.

Weber declined to comment outside court.
