MOVING ON IN LIFE

-

Q

A calf injury robbed you of the chance to finish your career on a high in 2016. When do you think you would have retired if not then?

A

It was always the plan to retire that year. It would have been nice to go out on a high but the body couldn’t hold on for that one more season. It would’ve been nice to finish that season on a huge high, winning the three in a row but I decided to come back and try one more series and pushed the body that little bit too far.

Q

Was there still more you wanted to achieve or were you satisfied with the way it ended?

A

It would have been nice to add another world title. I never really got there to do many. I always had something going on at that stage of the year and never really committed to the world titles, so that would have been nice to put that on the resume. I did manage to get a world board race but not a world ironwoman.

Q

You’re now mother to a 10month-old girl, Charlotte. What’s harder, waking up to a crying baby or to an alarm to go to training?

A

It is a challenge every time she wakes up! This morning it was 3am, which was a little bit too early to be awake. Waking up and knowing you have to go to a pool, that was always really tough. Swimming was never my strong suit. But I think I’ll sign her up for Nippers for surf safety and the family you find. I have so many friends from around the world I never would’ve made if not for surf. Even if she isn’t competitive, as long as she’s happy with whatever she does, we’re happy.
