Switch of clubs proves winner

YOU could have forgiven Courtney Hancock for cutting a nervous figure on her first day of training for Surfers Paradise surf club.

At the age of 31 and in the twilight of her career, Hancock decided to switch clubs midsummer in search of a fresh start.

And after competing for Northcliffe since she was a teenager, the club that has produced some of surf lifesaving’s biggest names became her new home.

“It was a big change for me in the middle of the season,” Hancock said.

“I feel really grateful to be part of the club.

“With Karlee (Nurthen) Bay (Wildin-Snedden) and all the boys as well, it’s a really tight-knit group.”

In early December, Hancock’s morning routine underwent a major makeover as she made her first commute to Surfers Paradise.

But unlike kids on their first day of school, Hancock was intoxicated by the allure of new beginnings. “The first day turning up at training, it wasn’t so much nervousness but excitement,” she said. “I knew that was where I wanted to be.

“You make the decision and there’s a reason for that so I just had to go with my gut.

“Zane (Hamill) is an incredible coach and destined for big things in the coaching world in the future so I’m really grateful to be under his wing.”

Though she is yet to be presented with her blue and gold racing cap, Hancock has her immediate sights set on finishing the Nutri-Grain series in style.

The Sawtell junior finished fifth in her first race for the club in December and is currently ranked fifth overall in the series, which has already been won by Lana Rogers.

“You’re going for second not first so there’s a sense of disappointment that the opportunity isn’t there,” she said.

“I’d love to go out and finish on the podium.”

Beyond the Nutri-Grain series, Hancock hopes to cap off her first few months at the club with a third Australian ironwoman title in April.

“I feel really determined to get there and I feel nervous just thinking about

it,” she said.
