South is hot stuff Currumbin Waters leads surge in home demand

- JANELLE ESTREICH

CURRUMBIN Waters is hot property, according to new data and southern agents who report buyers are queuing up to get into the on-trend suburb.

Data released by realestate.com.au this week shows more than 3500 searches were made for Currumbin Waters property in the three months to January, making it the mostsearched Gold Coast suburb.

While traditional hot spots Mermaid Waters, Burleigh Waters and Broadbeach Waters ranked two, three and eight respectively, southern suburbs including Tugun,

Elanora, Palm Beach and Currumbin were in the top 10.

The data is backed up by southern agents who confirm unprecedented interest in Currumbin Waters, driven by the Palm Beach boom.

Agent David Stringer, of DJ Stringer, who has been selling property in Currumbin Waters for 18 years, said demand was the strongest he had seen.

“We held an open home at 12 Bradshaw Drive last Saturday and had 43 groups through – that’s a record for our office,” he said. “We had several written offers and a signed contract over the asking price within two days.”

Mr Stringer said interest was high among first-home buyers and young families wanting easy access to the beach, trendy bars and cafes,

Currumbin Shopping Village and PBC State High School.

Andy Hogarth, of McGrath Palm Beach, said high prices in Palm Beach were driving buyers to surrounding suburbs.

“For $700,000 to $900,000 you’ll get a really nice house in Currumbin Waters whereas the same money buys a knockdown in Palm Beach,” he said.

Director of economic research at REA Group Cameron Kusher said proximity to water continued to dominate the demand across the Gold Coast property market.

“Currumbin Waters is the Gold Coast’s most in-demand suburb,” he said.
