-

ALEC POKARIER Who am I?

Full-time campaigner since August 2019, previously worked for some of the largest tourism operators on the Gold Coast, as well as in state and federal governments. Age 24.

Why am I running?

I’m running for council as a local of almost 20 years because I want to upgrade our local roads, keep rates low and deliver on my plan for a better and safer northern community. I’ve been out fighting for our fair share for six months now and I’ll continue to do so everyday with your vote.

to make sure things are done correctly, and I’m sure there is always room for improvement.

“It’s (now) about simple things like parking. You end up with people with four or five cars and suddenly parking is an issue on the street, and

RENEE CLARKE Who am I?

A counsellor at Queensland Health who previously worked supporting foster families and in some of the toughest prisons in the state. I and my husband Ben, a tradie, have just had our second baby. Age 26.

I moved to the Gold Coast 22 two years ago. Being stuck in traffic and driving on dodgy roads was the last straw and why I decided to run. Traffic and roads can’t be ignored any longer. What I’m finding is most people feel the same way. Poor roads is the best example of the neglect of the north. That’s why we are called the “forgotten suburbs”. We need a fresh voice, of someone who has the experience of raising a family here.

MARK HAMMEL Who am I?

A business manager for J.J Richards and Sons. Age 32.

Why am I running?

A lifetime Division 1 local, I was born, raised and live in the suburb of Alberton. The Hammels were one of the original families to settle on the Gold Coast. I am deeply passionate about making sure Division 1 remains a great place to live and operate a business. I want to give residents and businesses a voice to ensure the future of Division 1 is decided by them. Upgrade roads to ease congestion, build vital infrastructure before development, get tough on crime and hooning and protect the local environment. I want to reduce red tape for businesses, give farmers more certainty, and ensure council supports local sport and community groups.

ANDREW STIMSON Who am I?

A high school teacher with both educational and business qualifications. I have worked in sales, marketing and education. Age 63.

Why am I running?

To play an effective role in the ongoing improvement of our society and its many facets. The challenges the Gold Coast faces on global warming are great and experts are telling us we must act quickly. We need councillors who will object to unsustainable, profit-driven “development”. Put people ahead of developer profits. I want a sustainable Gold Coast, with active, healthy citizens who have better work-life balance. Improve public transport, support community events and programs that encourage equality and tolerance.

PAT REYNOLDS Who am I?

A business development manager for not-forprofit disability employment provider

Epic Assist, previously worked in printing and as a breakfast announcer and sports presenter at a local radio station. Ex-chairman of a large body corporate. Age 55.

Why am I running?

As a long-term resident and active community member, the opportunity to help shape the division’s future was too strong to ignore. There’s an old saying that council is all about roads, rates and rubbish, but it’s the peoplewho make a community what it is. I want to ensure the division is a vibrant, safe and productive community that everyone prospers in.
