TUNNEL VISION
STUNNING photos like this one taken at Coolangatta will feature at a new exhibition tonight when surf snappers Mitch Gilmore, Jake Brereton and Nick Jones showcase the beauty of the Gold Coast to the rest of the world.
THREE good mates who love immersing themselves in Gold Coast surf to capture stunning photographs think big-city folk are “missing out on all the action”.
Part-time ocean photographers Jake Brereton, Nick Jones and Mitch Gilmore have captured action on southern Gold Coast surf breaks for five years, with their pictures shared by World Surfing League and GoPro.
After following each other on Instagram, the tradie, hairdresser and construction manager have decided to take their “hobby to the next level together in Brisbane”.
The trio are known for hosting Gold Coast ocean photography events to encourage others to get among the action. But Mr Brereton, 25, said Burleigh to Snapper Rocks was now “saturated with ocean photographers”.
“We just had to find a way to differentiate ourselves and stand out,” the full-time telecommunications technician said.
“Now we want to blow them up and have city exhibitions to give them justice. Scrolling through your phone and double clicking on images on Instagram is just not the same.”
Construction manager Mr Jones, 49, said meeting the boys was a “dream come true” and he is proud to show off his work at their first showing, 3 Good Mates: An Ocean Art Exhibition at Milton’s Newstead Brewing Co tonight.
“We hope it is the first of many,” he said. “We want the city to meet the sea because we feel Brisbane is missing out on all the action.”
The exhibition will run from 4pm to 10pm and include live music, cold beer and artwork available to purchase.
