Who am I?

A science educator at the

University of

Queensland and the

Animal Justice Party candidate. I am an environmental scientist, passionate educator and animal rights advocate with qualifications in law.

On a mission to encourage and inspire people to reevaluate their relationship with nature, I believe we need to embed earthcentred philosophies and principles in human governance systems, society and culture. As a local resident of more than a decade, I want to see the city flourish and grow in an ecologically responsible way. I will bring balance and action to council, and the knowhow to create a kinder and more sustainable shared vision.

I’m a long-standing resident. My first home on the Gold Coast was Burleigh Heads in 1968, later moving to Palm Beach. This is where I raised two sons, loved and lost my darling husband to cancer, and welcomed three beautiful grandchildren. Elected in 1991 I have served the city as Deputy Mayor, chair of the water committee guiding the city through the worst drought on record. The city went on to win the World Water Award. My education on how to win against all odds began early in my career in council. Palm Beach residents were facing losing their homes, repairs they could not afford due to the Palm Beach subsidence catastrophe. I won payouts for the victims.

I have been instrumental in having proposed changes delivered in the Town Plan for Palm Beach and more work is to be done. To complete the upgrade of the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre and Youth Facility; complete the adventure playground at Schuster Park. I will continue to fight against light rail destroying the area. Welcoming Burleigh Heads into Division 13, my focus will be addressing the light rail, carparking and continue enhancing the arts, cultural and sporting activities.

Why am I running? BERN YOUNG Who am I?

I’m an ABC

Radio broadcaster and journalist, mum of two school-aged children, partner to a musician and passionate Gold Coaster.

To achieve better communication, a better City Plan and more inclusion of community voices in decision making. I’m an expert communicator who can promote better practices for community consultation. While investigating the City Plan amendments last year, I could see so many areas that were shaping the city but reporting on the issues wasn’t enough to change things. As a candidate, I’ve orchestrated a public submission for three measures which would improve the character and limit the height and bulk of new buildings in Palm Beach and Burleigh Heads.

Why am I running? KATRINA BEIKOFF Who am I?

A Walkley Awardwinning investigative journalist, communication strategist, editor and writer, and a mum and volunteer in our community, including the senior vice president of the Palm Beach Currumbin Junior AFL club. I am a patrolling lifesaver at Pacific Beach, between Palm Beach and Tallebudgera, and support our Gold Coast Nippers as an accredited sports official. I’m also heavily involved in our schools – through Palm Beach Currumbin High School P & C, and for nine years at Elanora State School.

I bring new energy, fresh eyes and smart solutions to the big issues that are facing our community today and as we move forward. This includes rapid, overwhelming development, and the traffic and parking problems. I will protect what is unique and valuable about our slice of the Gold Coast. I listen and will bring the positive changes our community is asking for and make sure we are listened to in the decisions that affect us.
