DEALING WITH COVID

-

Q

What has the build-up to Round 1 been for you and the rest of the team, considering the uncertainty you had about it going ahead due to COVID-19?

A

It’s been a bit unusual but in saying that we just prepared as you normally would for a game. Because it’s such a long build-up to the season that we want to get into the games. We have got the green light to play, which is great. I’m sure running out (to play Port Adelaide) will certainly be different.

We have been taking the same precautions as the public with hygiene and the boys are bumping elbows instead of high-fiving. It’s about doing all the little things to make sure we can minimise the risk. The biggest thing that made us comfortable to play was getting that advice from the chief medical officer. We didn’t seem at any heightened risk so the players were keen to get on with it.

Q

There has been talk of the players having to take a pay cut as the AFL tries to get a handle on things. Are you OK with that?

A

It is what it is. AFL is going to take a big hit so we will have to take a hit too and everyone is understanding of that. It’s not just the players affected, it’s industry-wide.

I feel for the ones who could potentially lose their jobs.

The players are grateful we are going to have jobs. The impact on grassroots is a bit unknown so I hope that the AFL can work it out.

That’s the reason why it’s important we keep funding and generating money for them.
