SANCTUARY COVE GEM WINS BUILDING AWARD

- ELIZABETH TILLEY

A STRIKING subtropical home with a floating roof and indoor garden running through its centre has won the national home building industry’s top award.

The Cove House on the Coomera River at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast was designed by Justin Humphrey Architect and built by BJ Millar Constructions.

The Queensland builder was last night awarded

Australian home of the year at the 2020 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards.

The property also won the award for the HIA Australian custom built home.

The ceremony was cancelled due to COVID-19, with the winners announced online for the first time.

The HIA described The Cove House as “a sophisticated nod to brutalist architecture and tropical modernism, masterfully crafted with an extraordinary level of customised detail”.

The home has a floating roof and lush, open-air garden atriums.

A charcoal-coloured kitchen flows to an outdoor entertaining terrace with a barbecue, built-in fireplace, sunken lounge and pool overlooking the water.

The home uses natural materials, with a strong indoor/outdoor living focus, and incorporates gardens within its interior design.

The Cove House includes a large master bedroom and ensuite, two guest bedrooms and a home office.

The sleeping quarters are separated from the living, dining and entertaining areas by indoor gardens.

The home also embraces “passive design principles” including large roof overhangs and rainwater.

North Queensland’s MyStyle Homes and Kim Duffin Design took out the HIA Australian bathroom design award and kitchen design award.
