SHEPPARD FANS ON A HIGH AFTER AIRPORT GIG

- EMILY HALLORAN emily.halloran@news.com.au

IT was a “once in a lifetime” gig which will go down in history.

Yesterday the Gold Coast Airport shut down the runway for Brisbane pop band Sheppard to perform a show, which had never been done before.

A stage was set up for the band – which includes siblings George, Amy and Emma Sheppard – to perform six songs within half an hour on the tarmac, beside a jet.

It was likely to be one of the only concerts to be performed on the Gold Coast this year.

“It’s a bit of a pinch yourself moment isn’t it,” George said.

“I never thought we’d be doing something like this, and probably no one ever will again. This might be the only gig we play this year.

“We had three runthroughs yesterday for soundchecks so fingers crossed. It’ll be nice to play some new music, especially in a place like this.

“There will be a private jet behind us which will make us look even more rock star.”

Emma said they felt “really proud to be Queenslanders”.

“To have this opportunity and represent Queenslanders is a pretty special,” she said.

Due to the pandemic, Gold Coast Airport has gone from 420 flights a week to three.

It took organisers a week and a half to organise.

The concert came about during an interview with Sheppard and Moyra Major and Simon Baggs from Southport-based radio station Hot Tomato.

Gold Coast Airport chief operating officer Marion Charlton was thrilled to make the show happen as it would show off the city around the world and hopefully boost tourism.

The show was watched and listened to by an estimated audience of 130,000.
