Sporting facilities open doors gradually

DUMPS, aquatic centres and sports centres are just some of the Gold Coast City Council services reopening this week, but the city’s 12 libraries remain closed.

Restrictions on waste and recycling centres are gone but every second parking bay is closed to ensure social distancing. In a bid to further minimise delays, residential green waste is only being accepted at Coomera, Molendinar, Merrimac and Reedy Creek.

Today, major sporting venues across the city are reopening, but not for everyone. The Coomera Indoor Sports Centre is open for gymnasticsleased space only, while the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium is open at set times for squash, roller sports and basketball.

At the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, basketball, netball, futsal and volleyball resume during set times while the venue allows casual shoots for up to 20 people during certain times. The Gold Coast Sports Precinct opens between 4-10pm and the Gold Coast Cycle Centre from 4-8pm.

Tourist parks are taking bookings from June 13 but only for villas, ensuite sites and selfcontained caravans because Queensland Health requirements insist on communal amenities and cooking areas remaining closed.

Aquatic centres at Southport, Palm Beach and Miami will open restrictive services on June 22, allowing groups of 20 in the separate sections of the venues, with other centres expected to open in Stage 3 or once any refurbishments are completed.

Community centres remain open for essential services, with consideration of nonessential activities for up to 20 where social distancing and other hygiene requirements can be achieved.

A range of outdoor Active and Health programs will return for up to 20 people with bookings required.
