Free coffee raises funds

- EMILY HALLORAN

A GOLD Coast cafe owner won’t make a cent this weekend as he hands out free coffee to raise money for a local indigenous charity.

Brodie Green, who owns hole-in-the-wall coffee shop Seadog on James St in Burleigh, attended Brisbane’s Black Lives Matter protest last weekend saying it was a “huge eye opener”.

Desperate to do something locally, Mr Green has planned to get the community to come together by handing out free coffee and selling raffle tickets.

“Our cafe will be raising funds for the indigenous community in support of the Black Lives Matter movement,” he said.

“We want to live in Australia where racism is not tolerated and equality is valued above all. This (event) is to bring everyone together. There’s lots of amazing businesses who have donated prizes for the raffle.”

All donations and raffle ticket sales will go to Coolangatta-based not-forprofit Krurungal Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Welfare, Resource and Housing.

Aunty Joyce Summers, who is a highly respected Aboriginal elder and runs Krurungal, will be at James St on both days.

Mr Green says the event is great for those who don’t know how to help to support the movement.

“Everything raised will go straight to Aunty Joyce and (son) Alfie for their charity to help get a car for their organisation,” Mr Green said.

“We’re hoping to raise $20,000. We’d like to help them get a new car.

“I really wanted her there because people who aren’t too sure about the culture and community can talk to her.”

This isn’t the first time Mr Green has given away free coffee.

He gave away more than 560 cups of coffee to women in May 2019 after copping negative feedback from a man for a picture he shared online in response to restrictive new abortion laws in Alabama.

He received more than a thousand positive messages of praise and raised $1369 from purchases by men and donations during the weekend. They were donated to local charity Support The Girls.
