Outburst to make a real impact in Phoenix

- MARK OBERHARDT

DOOMBEN

PROMISING two-year-old Outburst is primed to give shuttle stallion Real Impact his first Australian stakes winner.

Trainer Paul Messara has scratched Outburst from Sydney to concentrate on the Listed The Phoenix (1600m) at Doomben today.

NSW jockey Jeff Penza rode Outburst when the gelding won at Scone two weeks ago but, with interstate coronavirus restrictions still in place, Messara had to find a Brisbane-based replacement.

He has gone with in-form jockey Brad Stewart who is chasing his sixth stakes win of the truncated winter carnival.

Messara trains for Arrowfield Stud which retained Outburst when he failed to make his reserve at the Magic Millions yearling sales.

Outburst was Arrowfield Stud’s former shuttle sire Real Impact’s first Australian winner when he scored at Scone.

A multiple Group 1 winner, Real Impact shuttled to Australia three times and has already had a Group 1 winner in Japan.

“He (Real Impact) has three-year-olds doing well in the northern hemisphere and we are hoping he will get top three-year-olds here,” Messara said.

“It would obviously be great for us to get his first Australian winner and first Australian stakes winner.”

Messara hopes the trip away to Queensland will help Outburst mature into a spring carnival horse.

“He can have a break after Saturday and I think in six months you will see a really nice horse,” Messara said.

Fellow trainer Stuart Kendrick is confident Way Beyond and Cosmic Gossip will race well in The Phoenix as they drop back in class.
