Understanding triggers key to solving COVID-19 puzzle PAM DELAHUNTY-HUNTER, BIGGERA WATERS

-

I REALISE one of the main topics of conversation and concern on our planet over the last six months is the impact COVID-19 has on every one of us in every aspect of our lives. We all try to divert our attention elsewhere and have a good laugh but this virus remains serious and is totally consuming our otherwise normal lives.

Although we have come a long way in leaps and bounds with ever-changing technology since early times, it is astounding that such a virus can put such a hold on all our activities. In actual fact, at times I wonder how far we have progressed with our thinking processes as opposed to our much earlier primates.

I find it hard to comprehend that a young gentleman interviewed this morning on television commented that he will continue to kiss and hug his friends and COVID-19 is just a virus that 99year-olds get. My facts say otherwise! But each to their own unfortunately.

In my opinion there are lots of pieces to the coronavirus jigsaw that are missing, apart from the arrogance of a minority who refuse to abide by social distancing.

I am concerned by the nature of this virus as it can present as asymptomatic in some and yet produce gastro-intestinal issues, rashes etc. in others. Also, the COVID testing has proven false positives in others with threads of virus DNA in supposedly recovered patients.

This is a major aspect of the virus which is frustrating and baffling to our medicos/infectious disease specialists.

I get that the reproductive factor can infect two-and-a-half people by one carrier but I think it is high time our top scientists thought/researched outside the box and leave the door slightly ajar to other possibilities/theories on what is causing this highly contagious “nightmare”, along with finding its ignition switch within its dormant stage.

Australia is currently being referred to as an island sanctuary but being a realist (not wavering on pessimism), I hope it can remain as such for all of us.

If social distancing can save one life, then it is well worth continuing to do so at this time!
