Turning pedal power into solar power
A NEW app, backed by cycling great Stuart O’Grady, has been launched with the ambition of disrupting the traditional charity fundraising model.
Developed in Adelaide, Solar Cyclist’s purpose is to deliver solar power to communities that do not have access to reliable electricity.
By linking the app to their Strava accounts, users are able to keep track of the distances they ride. Each month, the app converts the kilometres into watts of solar power. A payment is then made to charity partners to install a corresponding number of solar panels on homes and hospitals in disadvantaged regions around the world.
Solar Cyclist general manager Luke Lombe said the gamification of charitable donations had the potential to revolutionise the fundraising model. Former Olympic gold medallist O’Grady has been named as a brand ambassador.
