Skipper aims lines at his next winner

GRANT Wharington, Sydney-Hobart yacht race winner, is sailing into the equivalent of stateroom class in the Gold Coast apartment market.

The long-time builder is planning three penthousestyle apartments overlooking the Coomera River at Paradise Point.

He describes the full-floor homes as “super high-end”.

Mr Wharington this week said they would sell for north of $3.5m to more than $6m, the tag expected on the top floor of a three-level building.

“There’ll be nothing like it in the area.

“The site’s in a fully northfacing position with deep water and bridge-free access.

“There’ll be a 48m jetty, giving the three penthouse owners more than 20m each of mooring room.”

Mr Wharington took line honours in the 2003 SydneyHobart as the skipper and owner of the $4 million Skandia. The following year the yacht, as Wild Thing, was leading the race but capsized and the crew abandoned ship.

Mr Wharington has been a builder for close to 40 years and operated in Victoria, where homes he has built and sold include a $5m-plus property at Mornington.

He moved to the Gold Coast 10 years ago and has been involved in marinerelated ventures and in commercial construction.

In March he paid $2.05m for a 50-year-old home on an 888sq m site at 2 Paradise Parade, Paradise Point.

He is seeking development approval for his high-end apartments, the work of the Raunik Design Group.

They will be in a threelevel building with basement parking and with the first and second-floor penthouses each serviced by their own lift.

Each 500sq m home will have three or four bedrooms with ensuites, a media room or study, a pool, and parking for three cars.

Mr Wharington also has three apartments under way in Sapphire Street, Hollywell, on a 649sq m site bought by wife Kylie for $715,000 in 2019. The Hamptons-style properties are priced between $650,000 and $850,000.
