JACKSON’S CHANCES LOOK SWELL

- WITH NIC DARVENIZA, ELIZA REILLY & TOM BOSWELL

GOLD Coast’s Jackson Graham is on the verge of securing the state surfing crown he has come so close to winning multiple times before.

Graham will be among a host of junior surfers who will congregate this weekend for the final event of the 2020 Queensland State Junior Surfing Titles series, which will kick off on Saturday and run over two days on the Sunshine Coast.

The series is the pathway for athletes vying for a spot in the Queensland state team to compete at the 2020

Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

The surf forecast shows a 1-3ft northeast swell approaching the Sunshine Coast in time for the event.

Graham (Palm Beach, QLD) currently leads the ratings in the under-18 boys’ division, ahead of Marlon Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD) and Cameron MacDougall (Little Mountain, QLD).

Graham’s performance at the first event on the Gold Coast earned him its highest single-wave score (9.6 out of a possible 10) on an excellent barrel ride, and Graham is showing no signs of slowing down for event two.

”We were super lucky to have such good waves at the first event on the Gold Coast,” Graham said.

“The win definitely gave me confidence heading into the second event on the Sunshine Coast.

“To win a state title has been my main goal for this year with everything else going on – I’ve come close a couple of years but hopefully this year I can claim my first one.”

The Sunshine Coast’s Ellia Smith (Coolum Beach, QLD) currently leads the ratings in the under-18 girls division, ahead of Raya Campbell (Coolangatta, QLD) and Giorgia Lorentson (Noosa, QLD).

Smith is also in fine form heading into event two, after an impressive performance at the opener.

I’VE COME CLOSE A COUPLE OF YEARS BUT HOPEFULLY THIS YEAR I CAN CLAIM MY FIRST ONE.
