Josh is keen to show he Kann

Interstate gig an option

FORMER Australian Under-19s all-rounder Josh Kann is ready to kickstart his cricketing career interstate after deafening silence from Queensland cricket.

Kann, now 20, is the Gold Coast Dolphins’ leading runscorer in 2020 with 350 allformat runs at 58.33 from batting sixth in the Dolphins line-up.

After making his Queensland Second XI debut last year, Kann’s desire is to stay in his home state.

But since his return to the Dolphins, the lack of communication with Queensland coach Darren Lehmann has Kann ready to explore other opportunities.

“There’s not really too much happening with Queensland Cricket,” Kann said. “I don’t really want to leave. “I want to give it my best shot in my home state, give it 100 per cent and hope it pays off but there’s been nothing .

“I haven’t spoken to Queensland Cricket for a while.

“I feel like I’m having a good start to the season but I’ve got to keep going and give them more reasons why I should be there.

“I’m only 20 so I feel like I’ve got a couple of years I can have to my advantage but this year and next has got to be a turning point in my career.

“I want to get to that next stage in a year or so.”

A crowded roster of allrounders at the Bulls, including club teammate Michael Neser, complicates Kann’s career pathway in Queensland.

Up-and-coming all-rounders Angus Lovell from Sunshine Coast and Norths’ Josh Brown are also pressing for a chance in Lehmann’s squad, ramping up the stakes for Kann in 2020.

Kann bowled more than 200 overs last season, secondmost in the team, taking 31 wickets at 26.52 in a strong year with the ball.

This season Kann has bowled just 25 overs in eight innings, with Queensland paceman Xavier Bartlett enjoying an expanded role alongside young spinner Hugo Burdon.

“I’ve been given more of an opportunity batting this year but I’m not bowling much,” Kann said.

“Getting a chance to bowl and put my foot in the door by being an all-rounder would be good.”

Kann has engaged prominent rugby league player agent Chris Orr to help him further his cricketing dream in Queensland or interstate.
