Dolphins on finals missions

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

THE Gold Coast Dolphins are looking to cement T20 finals spots in both the women’s and men’s competitions with the sides travelling to Brisbane for a weekend full of games.

The men’s side plays at Allan Border Field on Saturday against South Brisbane in the morning and University of Queensland in the afternoon.

The Dolphins will then travel to Ivor Marsden Memorial Park to play Ipswich on Sunday in the final T20 roster match.

With a win and a loss after last weekend’s efforts, Dolphins captain Matt Kuhnemann said consistency was the key to his team making the T20 finals.

“We showed last week that our best is good enough. In the first game we chased down Valley’s 187, who had players like Usman Khawaja and Jack Wildermuth in the team,” he said.

“We weren’t able to back it up in the second game easily being bowled out cheaply.

“There were some great signs last week with Josh Kann making 93 (off 52 balls) in the first game and bowling really well in both games.

“Most of the batters got a score in one of the games.

“Our bowling was also a bit inconsistent but Liam HopeShackley (pictured) took a hattrick in the first game, which was great to be a part of.”

The women’s side travel to University of Queensland on Sunday to take on Ipswich in the morning and University in the afternoon.

The Dolphins are third on the Katherine Raymont Shield T20 ladder and coach Garry Lovett said these games were crucial for the side to make the semi-final on December 19.

“It’s going to be a big weekend for the team,” he said. “The girls have been playing really well and hopefully can keep that form going this Sunday.”
