Shop brings together women of the world

- EMILY TOXWARD

IF you’re hunting for a lastminute Mother’s Day gift, consider supporting women around the world while you shop.

Earrings made with Peruvian sheep wool, coin necklaces worn by nomadic gypsies in Pakistan and clutches made with African fabrics all form a bespoke collection of items collated by Charlotte Petrucci.

The Burleigh Heads interpreter speaks five languages and fell in love with Australia during a solo backpacking visit in 1999. She moved here in 2006.

Her online store, Things Of, is a result of the Italian-born traveller’s passion for cultural diversity and heritage.

While globetrotting in her 20s she accumulated quirky accessories, clothing and items from various countries.

She decided to open a store during COVID-19.

“Since starting my business I have had the chance to support small businesses and charities in Senegal, Kenya, Peru, Ukraine, India and Pakistan,” Ms Petrucci said.

Her dream, once borders open, is to visit select countries and work with small, locally owned businesses to support their products, culture and heritage.

“Starting this business during a pandemic was pretty challenging, not being able to physically visit these countries, but despite everything, I have created some fantastic virtual business connections.

“And while I can’t wait to expand my small business and bring more awareness about cultural diversity to Australia, my aim will always remain to support women-run businesses around the world.”
