Demons straighten things out with talls

- TOM BOSWELL

AN influx of talls has the Surfers Paradise Demons set to straighten up their attack and deliver the scoreboard pressure that has cost the team in two tight games.

Forward Ben Merrett and defender Jack Taylor have returned to the Demons side while Southport Sharks-listed player Dan Charlesworth (pictured) has come into the team for the QAFL Round 6 game against Noosa at Sir Bruce Small Park on Saturday.

Merrett has recovered from a concussion sustained in Round 4 against Labrador while Taylor has been building his fitness in the reserves after suffering a hamstring injury.

It’s a huge boost for the Demons who lost to Broadbeach by 10 points last week and Labrador by eight a week earlier.

“We are shaping up well and have got some players back in which is good,” Surfers Paradise coach Brad Moore said.

“We have more talls so it should straighten us up going forward.

“We have had a small forward line so we had to manufacture some work around the opposition to get the ball into the smaller players but we should be able to go more direct now.

“We are playing Noosa for the first time for QAFL points so I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m really happy with the way the boys have been playing in the last few weeks.

“We haven’t got over the line against two quality opposition but we have still had a lot of improvement while still playing good footy.”

Ladder leader Broadbeach will travel away to play Wilston Grange on Saturday while Labrador coach Nick Malceski is confident his team will continue to show improvement when it plays Mt Gravatt at Cooke Murphy Oval.

“We have been a bit inconsistent but we were a bit better last weekend against Maroochydore who are a good footy team,” Malceski said.

Ruckman Andy Hollis will return for the Tigers after recovering from a groin injury.
