RLGC finals berth on the line for Redbacks, Eagles

- CALLUM DICK

FOR Currumbin coach Matt Geyer the finals equation is simple.

Win Saturday’s away clash with Mudgeeraba and the Eagles’ finals fate is in their hands; lose, and you’re starting to pull out the calculator worrying about “mathematical possibilities”.

Geyer cares not for the maths.

He says if the Eagles can’t drag themselves out of the mid-table logjam then they probably don’t deserve to play finals, regardless.

It shapes as a massive game for both sides at Firth Park.

“We have to get out of that bottleneck because we’re knee-deep in it at the moment,” Geyer said.

“We’ve got (Mudgeeraba) and Bay next, who are right there with us in the dogfight, which is a good thing because it means it’s all in our hands.”

Ben Hannant will finally

make his long-awaited Currumbin A-grade debut on Saturday.

Geyer said the former Australian and Maroons forward would likely start against the Redbacks after overcoming the troublesome calf injury that scuppered his comeback.

Elsewhere, Southport will have the chance to separate itself from the chasing pack when it hosts competition leaders Burleigh at Owen Park on Saturday.

Israel Folau has been named to play at five-eighth for the Tigers against the Bears, partnering Kobi Annand in the halves.

Meanwhile, at Runaway Bay, the reigning premiers welcome Helensvale on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets look to be out of the finals hunt but could throw a massive spanner in the Seagulls’ post-season plans with an upset win on the road.

Joint leader Tugun sits out the round on a bye.
