Speeding into the Mermaid beachfront with a $15.9m house buy

- LISA HUGHES

FORMER Supercars driver Paul Weel and wife Emma are believed to be the buyers behind a $15.9m beachfront sale in Mermaid Beach.

The deal for 65 Albatross Ave was penned on December 16 through Amir Mian of Amir Prestige, marking the last of a recordnumber of $10m-plus sales on the Gold Coast in 2021.

The four-bedroom beachfront home on an 809sq m block was previously owned by Anna and Vincent De Pasquale, co-owners of Nanda, the pasta company, and was marketed with potential for development.

The house features an awardwinning kitchen with a cool room, off-street parking for 10 cars and has 12.5m of absolute beach frontage.

The De Pasquales are the original owners, buying it in 1980 for $200,000. They listed it for sale in 2012 for $7.1m but took it back off the market after more than two years without a sale.

They relisted it on December 9, and it was set to go to auction on January 22, but it appears the Weels were not going to leave an opportunity to secure the property to chance come auction day.

Mr Mian confirmed it had sold to a local sporting identity, but would not comment further. The Weels sold their sprawling, six-bedroom family home on the riverfront in Carrara in April for $10.9m.

At the time the couple said they would be making a tree-change, relocating to the 60ha property they bought in Gilston in 2020 for $7m, and where Emma was looking to build a world-class dressage facility.

They still own the Gilston property, but have now coupled it with the beachfront holding.

Mr Mian and colleague Karen Pirie backed up the mega sale with an $8.4m sale of 103 Commodore Drive in Paradise Waters. Peter Bately, with a background in development, bought it in 2017 for $5.02m before a big renovation.
