Titans gun seeks revenge
TITANS cult hero Greg Marzhew is ready to show the Eels what they missed out on after the barnstorming Gold Coast winger spent three years training against Parramatta’s top team.
Marzhew will face off against his former club at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday night when the Titans chase redemption following their controversial round 1 loss to the Eels.
One of the strongest ball carriers in the NRL, Marzhew has featured in all four of the Titans’ games this season after receiving an eleventh-hour call-up for the season-opener.
He is averaging 148m a game, has busted a team-high 22 tackles and scored two tries to prove he is a threat out wide for the Titans.
But it wasn’t that long ago that Marzhew thought his NRL dream would never come to fruition.
An under-20s star at the Titans, Marzhew headed south to Parramatta to chase a first grade debut but couldn’t crack it at the Eels despite being named in the NSW Cup team of the year in 2019.
Known as Greg Leleisiuao at the time, Marzhew finished first for run metres (4512m), tackle breaks (196) and third for line breaks (15) in the competition that year as Wentworth made the grand final.
With the Eels still cold on the idea of giving Marzhew a crack at the
NRL, he returned to the Titans in 2020 and eventually made his first grade debut last year, scoring six tries in eight appearances.
“I was there for three years,” Marzhew said.
“It was my defensive side that held me back. If that was good enough then I could have played, because my attack wasn’t a problem.
“I was also stuck behind Maika Sivo and Blake Ferguson, which narrowed down my opportunities there.
“I made the NSW Cup team of the year (and still couldn’t play NRL). It sucked; it felt like a long run for me. I have done five or six NRL pre-seasons now. It is always good to get a game against your old team.”
