1867 Bushranger brothers John and Thomas Clarke are hanged at Darlinghurst Jail for wounding Constable Miles O’grady with intent to murder in the NSW town of Nerrigundah. 1876 General George Custer’s forces are defeated by Sioux chief Crazy Horse. The 264 US troops all die in ”Custer’s Last Stand” at the Battle of Little Big Horn.
1903 In Paris, scientist Marie Curie announces the discovery of radium. She dies in 1934 of radiation poisoning
1926 Beryl Mills, 19, of Western Australia, wins the first Miss Australia competition, being chosen as the ”most beautiful girl in Australia”. The runner-up is Monica Mack of Sydney.
1936 Japan restricts imports of Australian wool, wheat and flour in retaliation to Australia’s duties on artificial silk and cotton and imperial trade preference. 1947 The Diary Of Anne Frank, recovered by her father Otto, is published.
1967 The Beatles perform their new song All You Need Is Love during a live international telecast.
1968 British comedian Tony Hancock, 44, is found dead in his flat at Bellevue Hill, Sydney after an overdose of barbiturates, a week after being divorced by his second wife.
1991 Croatia and Slovenia declare independence from Yugoslavia. Two days later, Serbs attack Slovenia and a decade of bloodshed follows.
