Aussie champ tees up homecoming, with jug
CAMERON Smith and the Claret Jug are coming home to Australia this summer.
The British Open champion confirmed on Friday he would return for the first time in three years to play the Australian Open and PGA and would be bringing his trophy with him.
Smith hasn’t played in Australia since the 2019 Presidents Cup and said he couldn’t wait to get back to Queensland and would be spending extra time at home to soak in an Aussie Christmas with his family.
“My plan is to play those couple of events in Australia,” Smith told Fox Sports from
Jacksonville as he enjoys three weeks break before picking up his clubs again for the Fedex Cup playoffs.
“I think my priority during those weeks is going to be to catch up with family and friends.
“I’ll probably stay a little bit after into Christmas and just really have a good time.
“I’m looking so forward to that. You really have no idea of it’s been three years since I’ve been at home and just to see some familiar faces will be so nice.”
Smith, 28, said the celebrations “hadn’t stopped” after his stunning one-shot win at St Andrews and “a bit of everything” had been drunk out of the Claret Jug.
He said his dad, who made a last minute decision not to travel to Scotland and was “kicking himself” would get a chance to get his sip from the trophy, as would everyone else who supported Smith including the members at Wantima, his golf club in Brisbane
“I get to keep it for a year. I‘ll definitely bring it down to Australia,” Smith said.
“And you know, all the family and friends, the people at the golf club who have supported me, you know, since I was three or four years old, that will get a sip of it. It would be real nice for everyone.”
