Coast hosting much-anticipated police titles

- HANNAH DAVIES

FOR the first time in 10 years, the Gold Coast will host over 130 police force members from across Australia on Sunday at the Australia and New Zealand Police Cricket Championships.

Mudgeeraba Nerang Cricket Club will host the event, which has not occurred since 2018 due to Covid, with matches played at Mudgeeraba, Broadbeach and Robina from Sunday to Friday.

Mudgeeraba club president Matt Gill said the tournament would be “hotly contested” with states pulling in some of the finest cricketers from across the country.

Gill served in the police

force on the Gold Coast for 12 years, and is a former Queensland team member himself.

“It’s a truckload of work, but we’re happy the carnival is happening because it’s been four years since it’s happened,” Gill said. “It’s good, competitive cricket. And it’s good for the police, they’ve got a tough job and they play hard cricket and there’s a lot of camaraderie between the states.

“There will be plenty of quality players involved. The Queensland team has Luke Feldman playing who’s just finished playing for the (Queensland) Bulls after 10 years.

“From the Gold Coast is Dion Bryant from Palm Beach, and Jack Hargreaves, former first grade Dolphins cricketer, is back for the week.”

The event has been running for nearly 50 years and will be played on the Gold Coast for only the third time, after hosting it in 1979 and 2012.

Queensland, WA, SA, Perth, NSW, Victoria, New Zealand and the ACT will compete in 45-over one-day cricket at Mudgeeraba, Broadbeach, and Cheltenham in Robina until the grand final next Friday.

In the Taper Premier League, round 6 will kick off with Broadbeach hosting Runaway Bay after a week off for the bye.

Queens will be looking to bounce back from their round 5 loss against Alberton Ormeau when they take on Helensvale, also coming off a loss, while Mudgeeraba will take on Burleigh.

Surfers Paradise could get their second win of the season as they come up against Southport Labrador, and Palm Beach will be out to climb the ladder when they face winless Coomera Hope Island.
