Beauty: Jessica Chastain

The raven-haired actress shares her thoughts on red hair, red lips and more

“Women become far more beautiful with age when they become more comfortable in their own skin” —Jessica Chastain

What is your beauty philosophy? Less is more. When I was younger, I thought I had to use a lot of makeup to find beauty. Then I realised that makeup is about highlighting what is already beautiful. You don’t need to cover up. Have you always loved your

beautiful hair? Being a redhead is unique, and I think as children we’re programmed to think that what’s different about us is bad. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realised that what’s different about us is what makes us special. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self, “What you dislike now, you’re going to embrace.” You’re often seen with a bold red lip. It makes me feel powerful. I don’t know why, but I’ve been wearing it since I was 18. There’s something so Old Hollywood and glamorous about the colour, and it elevates any outfit. My favourite is YSL.

How do you unwind? I do yoga. It’s a struggle to get to the mat, but as soon as I sit or lie down, I’m happy I’m there and excited about taking time to focus on myself and my body. Even if you do child’s pose or lie on your back for an hour, that’s fine! Has turning 40 changed your goals or what you spend your time on? I don’t have a list of things to do in a timeline. I don’t make goals for myself like that. I’m very into being in the moment. I find that if you truly do that, then you can’t help but do things you want to do and evolve as a person.
