Derby Day

ONE AWKWARD OUTFIT double-up, two former soap stars, Victoria’s Secret Angels and a hat that turned heads. This year’s Derby Day on Nov. 4 at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse was one to remember. Myer ambassador Jennifer Hawkins and reporter Francesca Cumani dressed in identical Myer-brand frocks and former local ladies Natalie Imbruglia and Melissa George visited, as well as models Elyse Taylor and Shanina Shaik. In ribbon-trimmed braids, “Shanina had a great time and I had a giggle or two with her,” says her stylist Michael Azzollini. Karl Stefanovic strode in with his girlfriend, model and shoe designer Jasmine Yarbrough, and The Block winners Elyse Knowles and Josh Barker also adhered to the black-and-white dress code, but it was Deputy Liberal Leader Julie Bishop’s dramatic headpiece that stole the show. ■

Model Shanina Shaik, in an Ellery jacket, was the Mumm champagne ambassador. “I wanted to show an edgier side that can be achieved without a fascinator or crown,” says her stylist, Michael Azzollini. Shaik’s fellow Victoria’s Secret Angel Elyse Taylor pulled off a 1950s-style Alex Perry number.

Twenty years after her single “Torn” shot her to superstardom, Natalie Imbruglia performed for Derby Day punters. Fresh from winning The Block, Elyse Knowles frocked up in Paolo Sebastian with boyfriend Josh Barker. Hamish Blake (left) and Andy Lee had a laugh.
