EMBRACING SISTERHOOD

NATALIE BASSINGTHWAIGHTE

-

As a longtime ambassador for Life Changing Experiences Foundation’s SISTER2SISTER mentorship program, which helps “at risk” young girls, the actress is dedicated to empowering teens. “Having someone who has your best interests at heart, you can’t put a price on that,” says the TV star, 42, who has “Ubuntu”—an African word describing the interconnectedness of humanity—tattooed on her arm. Bassingthwaighte is ever grateful for her connection with her family, including sisters Lisa, Melinda and Nicky. “We have a bond that will never break,” the mother of two tells WHO’S Karina Machado. “It makes me want to give back to people who don’t have that.”

What drew you to the SISTER2SISTER charity?

Everything about what they did was what I stand for—it’s about encouraging young girls to believe in themselves and follow their dreams, even amid adversity.

What kind of impact can a mentor have?

Having a mentor is a privilege, but I feel like without that, it’s really hard to get through life—without someone to guide you, nurture you and help you believe that anything is possible.

What message would you offer a young woman who’s struggling?

Be who you are, you don’t have to compare yourself to someone else; we’re all so different and that’s what makes it exciting. There are no limitations to what you can achieve when you set your mind to it ... It’s all about self-love and self-respect.

How can self-care influence the way we care for others?

It’s really important. If I take time for myself—through meditation, reading or going for a walk—i’m a better person. That’s when we can change the world.
