OLIVIA WILDE 34, WITH DAISY, 1

The Booksmart director and chief brand activist for True Botanicals, who shares Daisy and son Otis, 4, with actor Jason Sudeikis, opens up about being a nurturing role model.

How do you empower your daughter to feel strong?

I was lucky to have a mom who made me feel proud of how strong I was. When I got hurt, it was “Oh, you’re so brave.” And I find myself doing that with my own kids. I think it’s about reminding her that her strength is nothing to be ashamed of or dumbed down or apologised for.

You spoke at the Women’s March this year.

I marched for the first time in Washington when I was, like, 9 years old, with my mom. I grew up in DC, so I participated a lot in resistance. And that really came from my mom saying, “It’s valuable if you speak up.” And I think that’s what I’ll try to pass on to Daisy.

What are Otis and Daisy’s personalities like?

They’re both strong-willed and silly. They definitely have a sense of humour that comes from their dad. Daisy is a total hambone and has zero self-awareness. I find that beautiful, and I want to encourage her to maintain that.

How do you teach them to be compassionate?

It’s interesting. You have kids and you realise, like, “Wow, we’re really not born with empathy.” You have to teach them to share. Reminding them to put themselves in other people’s shoes is a big part of what we do, and it’s important to start young.
