WHO

CATRIONA ROWNTREE

For more than two decades, she’s told Aussies where to go, but the Getaway presenter, 46, who has had a dream job traipsing around the world, has had her share of dodgy trips, too, as she tells WHO contributor Shannon Molloy.

What’s the worst holiday you’ve had?

I could write a book. There was being snowed in while camping in the Rocky Mountains and waking to bear footprints surrounding my tent. There was being tear-gassed in Jerusalem. And once I was stuck on the world’s most boring river, pretending to like fly-fishing to win over this guy. He ended up marrying me, so maybe it wasn’t all bad.

What’s the least glamorous part of working in television?

Walking down the street and being told by someone: “You’re not nearly as fat as you look on the telly!” Oh, yeah. It happens quite a bit. My self-esteem is solid.

Are you engaged in politics?

Absolutely. I love being informed and offering an educated opinion. But between Barnaby, Trump and Trudeau, it beats the hell out of reality TV lately.

Is feminism still relevant today?

Has it ever lost its relevance? Feminism is about equality for all. That’s a common, daily goal we all share and one that never goes in or out of favour.

What’s your failsafe excuse for getting out of a dinner invitation?

“I think I’m travelling then...” But if I say it to you, I swear it’s the truth!

Will you let your kids go to Schoolies?

And come home with an STD? I don’t think so. (‘Getaway’ airs Sundays, 5.30 PM; Nine)
