LADY BIRD
STARRING: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf
If you missed this sweet indie when it was on at the movies, now is your chance to enjoy it at your leisure. Set in 2002, Christine Mcpherson (Ronan) is a typical self-obsessed 17-year-old—she rebels by dying her hair and asking everyone to call her by the moniker “Lady Bird.” She can be pretentious and brattish and not always the best of best friends to Julie (Beanie Feldstein), and her ongoing spats with her stressed out ma, Roseanne’s Metcalf, ring too true for every parent of teens who feel loved and loathed in equal measure. A keenly observed character study, deserving of more than its five Academy Award nominations. (Out now)
